A Conversation with Rivers Hedrick

Interviews Team Riders

11.26

What started as a simple text from David became one of the most versatile rail setups UNIT Parktech has built with a team rider.

Banks, landers, and a design that can be ridden as one obstacle or split into three — Rivers Hedrick’s signature feature was built for line variety from the very first sketch. We asked him about the idea, the process, and what he’s most excited to see riders try on it.

Rivers, take us back to the moment you first saw your signature feature floating on the water, what went through your mind?

I just remember thinking how wild it was! It was a pretty solid reminder that hard work pays off. I couldn’t wait to go get my first laps on it.

If you had to describe this feature in three words, what would they be?

Best feature ever.

What was the original vision behind this feature when the idea first came to life?

I wanted something you could hit every lap. Line variety, smooth landings, and satisfying full pulls.

Was there a specific element or shape that you knew had to be part of this design from the very beginning?

Banks and landers are some of my favorite parts of park riding. That’s exactly what I knew I wanted in a rail!

One of the most interesting aspects is that the feature can actually be split into three individual obstacles. Why was that versatility important to you?

It actually wasn’t the plan in the beginning. But David and John designed it in a way that it could be split. Now that I’ve ridden it split, I almost like all 3 pieces better separated than together! It’s just too fun hitting a simple up rail. Plus, it’s great when a park can use them for hacks with other rails or just straight solo.

When you look at the feature, what kind of tricks or lines immediately come to your mind?

Poppers into banks, creeper step ups, full pulls to the lander, wall to wall, re-entries, so many lines! That’s what I love about this feature, the options are endless.

What kind of riders do you think will enjoy this feature the most?

Everyone! Especially with all the variations, I believe there is a line for every rider.

How did the process with UNIT go from your first idea to finally seeing the feature on the water?

It was actually smoother than I thought! I remember I was sitting at Terminus when David texted me, “want to design a rail?” I was so stoked. I started sharing some of my ideas and we went from there! I think the process only took a couple weeks of back and forth Zoom calls. Then my home park surprised me about a year later as it rolled into the parking lot one day!

Knowing that three parks in Germany already have your signature feature, what are you most excited to see riders try on it?

I would love to see some more creative lines! Use of both walls and the creeper, or rail box rail. Post your clips and tag me!
